The critical importance of mobile friendly website design

You need a mobile friendly website design to rank higher on Google and retain mobile visitors on your website.

Google Search and mobile friendly website design

The Google Gods recently announced their mobile update ‘Mobilegeddon’ and their intention to start using website mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal.

Following their announcement, the online marketing world of web designers and digital marketers waited anxiously for the update and its carnage.

Unfortunately, the aftermath was rather disappointing, with very few visible effects.  Some of your competitors (with mobile unfriendly websites) somehow, still appeared on page 1. Although many mobile unfriendly websites did drop slightly in mobile search.

Admittedly, it took quite a bit of patience, meditation and some binge eating here and there to deal with the confusion.

However, Google eventually announced the actual mobile ranking update roll out.

What does this mobile-friendly website update mean?

Well, for starters, this update means that Google will now be penalising website ranking on mobile search results for mobile unfriendly websites.

Internet users will no longer be burdened with websites that are not mobile friendly and difficult to read on mobile. We will no longer be annoyed with having to zoom into web pages to read text and then scroll across to complete reading a sentence.

What you need to do about the Google mobile update?

This update will only affect websites that are not built in responsive website design (i.e. not mobile-friendly).

It will also only affect search rankings on mobile devices and not desktops.

However, with more than 30% of ALL GLOBAL web traffic (And growing) coming from mobile, can your business really afford not to rank well on a mobile device?

According to Google , 57% of users say they won’t recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site. A further 40% have turned to a competitor’s site after a bad mobile experience.

(Side note: Now would be a good time to check. Is your website is mobile friendly?)

If you’re only catching on now, you’re a little behind but have no fear once your site becomes mobile-friendly Google will automatically crawl and index your web pages.

For ITM web design this means that we will only build mobile responsive websites for our clients, whether it be DNN Software or WordPress.
